Discover the secret life of New Zealand’s fur seals whilst kayaking with them in their natural environment. Enjoy a peaceful 3 hour experience on Kaikoura's pristine waters where you get to enjoy an abundance of marine life in the majestic landscape of one of New Zealand’s most spectacular regions!

On the day of your kayak experience, you will first meet with one of our experienced guides. Here we will decide which part of the pristine peninsula we should explore. This will depend on a number of factors including weather conditions, movement of the wildlife and the experience level of the paddlers on the day.

Then it’s into the Landrover Defender as we drive to our kayak launch location. Here your SKOANZ qualified sea kayak guide will give you a safety briefing before teaching you some basic paddling techniques. Now that you are comfortable in your top of the range kayak, it is time to start the adventure.

You'll be guaranteed fur seal sightings and chance encounters with other marine life. The focus, however, will be on the fur seal colony. You will be captivated by the everyday activities of the seals as they hunt octopus from the sea floor, bask on the rocks and swim playfully around your kayak.

After this, you will set off back to the launch location to end a wonderful day on the water.

This experience voucher is valid for 12 months from date of purchase.

Venue:

Kaikoura, South Island - 2 hours north of Christchurch.

Session Length

This experience is available 7 days a week, all year round, weather permitting. The total experience runs for 3 hours with approximately 90 - 120 minutes spent on the water including about 30 minutes interacting with the fur seals.

Guidelines:

We can accommodate almost anyone. You don’t need any paddling experience for our tour as your guide will demonstrate the various paddling techniques used - it is quickly and easily learnt and gives you a very rewarding outcome. Non-swimmers are welcome. Open to all ages.

Numbers:

The price quoted is for 1 person. We operate with a maximum of 8 people in the group.

Spectators:

Spectators are welcome to walk along the shoreline.

Weather:

Sea kayaking may be cancelled due to wind and sea conditions. This is however, somewhat dependant on the experience level of the participant. In the case of poor weather, we will reschedule your experience for a later date.
