For The Discerning Wine Lover - a tour designed for those serious about wine and are looking for a more intimate experience of the regions wineries. Meet winemakers and people passionate about wine. Learn about Terroir and how this creates different wine styles.

Your experience begins from your accommodation where you will be picked up in a comfortable air-conditioned sedan.

Lunch will be at a local winery.

During the afternoon you’ll learn about the regions many different grape varieties and a little bit of local history. Once we reach our first winery we will take time to walk among the vines and learn about the unique growing conditions of the Gimblet Gravels district. You will taste classic red European varieties such as Syrah/Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Pinot Noir. The area is also famous for the white varieties, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Semillon, Pinot Gris and Viognier. Four to five wineries will be visited during the tour with time taken to enjoy various cheeses from around New Zealand. At the end of your tour you will be dropped off at your accommodation.

Our preferred vineyards include Trinity Hill, Matariki, Craggy Range, Ngatarawa, Kim Crawford, Unison, Sileni and Te Mata.

Venue:

Tours depart from Napier, Hastings and Havelock North. These three centres are all within a 30 km radius of each other. The nearest main centres being Taupo and Palmerston North both a two-hour drive away. Napier is 5 hours and 30 minutes drive from Auckland and 4 hours from Wellington.

Session Length

This tour operates 7 days of the week closed only on Christmas Day. The tour lasts around 8 hours starting at 9.30am and finishing at 5.30pm.

Guidelines:

Due to licensing laws all participants must be over the legal drinking age of 18 years. Alcohol may not be consumed in the vehicle and must be sourced from the licensed premises we visit.

Numbers:

This tour is exclusively for two people, however, we can cater for up to 8 people. Numbers may be larger on busy days in the summer and you will be informed of this when booking.

Spectators:

People are welcome to join the tour as non-participants in the wine tasting but will be expected to pay the full price for tour.

Weather:

All tours leave rain or shine.

Other Info:

Most wineries do not charge a tasting fee as the expectation is that you will learn about the particular winery's range of wines, and like them enough to want to buy. Of course if you really do not care for their range, you should not feel bad if you don't make a purchase.
